Advice on Saving Money When Traveling

When it comes to traveling it seems like all you do is spend, spend and spend some more.  Sometimes you wish you had a magical wand to make whatever you want appear for no price whatsoever.  Although that can’t happen do not fear. There is a way you can save your money and still get the most out of a vacation.  The answer is to go to the food markets instead of going to restaurants.  Don’t get me wrong, you will want to go out and eat sometimes especially when you want to sample the cuisine of another place (or if you write about it for a living).  Just don’t do it all the time.  Believe me this will save you from breaking the bank.

There are some markets that give you fresh organic food that can last for a little while.  Sometimes I get lucky because I’ve had a refrigerator to put it in but other times I have not had that luxury.  And that’s okay, you can still have fresh food without an icebox.  What you want to do is buy one of those cooler bags, fill it with ice and keep all of your most perishable foods in there.  You’ll have to dump the water out everyday but that is a small price to pay.  Once you are finished with this bag, you can always pack it up in your suitcase, take it home with you and save it for next time.

If you are on a road trip, it would be a good idea to invest in a cooler which is more of a box than a bag.   You can’t take it on an airplane but on the upside,  it keeps the ice (and therefore your food) for longer, it’s easy to store and lasts a long time.  The bags you may have to replace sooner.

So what foods should you buy?  what works the best?

Here is a list of things I like to keep in my hotel room:

For breakfast:

  1. Cereal
  2. Yogurt
  3. Fresh Fruit
  4. Tea or Instant Coffee

For Lunch:

  1. Bread
  2. Peanut Butter or a small package of sandwich meat (For the meat eaters in my life)
  3. Bag of mixed vegetables
  4. Microwave or just-add hot water Soup
  5. A jug of water

For Dinner:

  1. A protein of some kind such as Boiled Egg or Shrimp Tray (for the fish lovers)
  2. A ready-made salad with store bought salad dressing
  3. Chocolate bar for dessert.
  4. Bottle of Wine

So whether you are a person who wants to keep a steak, store some cereal or to keep your produce in tact, make sure you have an ice-bag, ice cooler and/or ice box to handle all your food storage needs.  Believe me you will need it because there is not enough magic in the world that will save your food or your money.  Luckily, practicality will.

  1. Great suggestions! I love cereal, even for trips on a plane. Also, I agree that water is very important as there are some places where it’s easy to get dehydrated. If we are on a road trip, we ALWAYS bring a cooler! However, my family and I have been taking more plane trips lately.

  2. Nice! I’m all for traveling on a budget. The first thing my wife and I do after checking into our hotel is head to the nearest market to fill our room with the basics. Saves so much money, and you’ll have plenty of food after a long day of adventuring.
