The Ultimate Calgary Comfort Foods

Do you ever feel like you need something delicious to lift you up?  Are you looking for that special something that makes you feel so damn good?  If the answer to these questions is yes then look no further.  Food does a lot for us.  It nourishes us, gives us health, and helps us with our emotions.  It is one of our most basic needs and magical ways we can work with the world. If you are in our lovely city of Calgary, (whether you live here or are just visiting) there are a few good choices for cuisines to put you in a state of contentment.  When you need comfort food, check out these places and dishes.

Kinjo’s Sushi: Midori Roll

Midori Roll

The ultimate vegetarian comfort food is found in the most unexpected place… Kinjos.  The Midori Roll is a sushi roll with red peppers, asparagus, yams and cream cheese mixed together wrapped in rice and spinach batter.  It’s healthy and yummy.  When you dip this roll into their sweet soy sauce, you feel like you are whisked away into a beautiful Japanese temple.  You can have your Zen and eat it too.  Besides who doesn’t love a place that writes “free love” on every check? You can find Kinjo’s at 7101 Macleod Trail SW, Calgary, AB T2H 0L8

Ricky’s All Day Grill: Cheezy Grilled Cheese and Tomato Basil Soup

Nothing says comfort like the classic grilled cheese and tomato soup combination and Ricky’s Grill takes it to the max.  They have a sourdough bread cooked with 4 different kinds of cheeses on the outside and 3 on the inside.  The cheeses are Canadian cheddar, Havarti, parmesan and pepper jack (The best kind).  It comes with their signature tomato basil soup.  This soup is not just any old tomato soup.  It is a flavorful, fresh and tasty bisque that has a hint of spice and a lot of warmth.  Go try it on 6262 Macleod Trail SW, Calgary, AB T2H 0K6

Glamorgan Bakery: Mini-Lemon Cheesecakes and Fancy Cupcakes

Fancy Cupcake and Lemon Cheesecake

No better cake masters than right here in my back yard.  I keep asking for their tasty treats on every birthday, Christmas or whenever the hell I feel like it.  The mini-lemon cheesecake contains graham crackers on the bottom, cream cheese filling in the middle, lemon curd on the top and a dark chocolate cup to hold it all in.  The best mixture you could ever ask for.  Then there are the fancy cupcakes.  I always reach for their chocolate flavor with buttercream icing.  Each one is a work of art.  They are the picture of flowers and a rainbow of colors.  Whether you go for the cheesecake or the cupcake, each bite will taste like spring and summer combined.  Check them out at 19, 3919 Richmond Road SW, Calgary, AB  T3E 4P2.

Earl’s: Mediterranean Linguine

Earl’s Linguine

The pasta dish that my friends keep teasing me about.  Whenever I go to Earl’s I order the Mediterranean linguine or as my friends call it, my crack cocaine.  It is absolutely addicting.  It’s a spicy tomato sauce with olives, red peppers, and feta cheese mixed with fettucine.  It doesn’t seem like much but it is so perfect in every bite.  I keep trying to recreate this dish at home but it has a different effect (it’s not so addicting).  The saying less is more really refers to this dish.  So go get it at 140 Stewart Green SW, Calgary, AB T3H 3C8.

Deluxe Diner: Breakfast Poutine

Breakfast Poutine

Simple but sensational.  This dish is a little skillet of Canadian magic.  You will have one soft poached egg, loads of Quebec cheese curds, ample parts of rosemary hash browns and covered with basil hollandaise.  Put it all together and you got yourself a comforting dish worthy of kitchen gods and goddesses alike.  The melted cheese alone makes you drift off into a cloud of bliss.  If you are ever in the neighborhood, check out the Deluxe Diner at 804 Edmonton Trail NE, Calgary, AB T2E 3J6.

Tim Horton’s: Frosted Cinnamon Roll

Tim Horton’s Cinnamon Rolls

The best kind of pastry known to any Canadian.  Now lots of people reach for their donuts but I love the FROSTED cinnamon rolls.  They start off sweet with all the sugar and frosting but then the spice of the cinnamon creeps up at you when you finish the bite.  It’s a sweet little bit of Canadian heaven that you can’t have enough of.  It’s also very inexpensive at $1.29.  Although Tim Hortons is all over the place, the one I often go to is 6815 Macleod Trail SW, Calgary, AB T2H 0L3.

Bernard Callebaut: Habanero Sea Salt Milk Chocolate Bar

Sweet, Spicy and Salty.  The three S’s you would never have thought would be together but they are in one fabulous

Chocolate with Sea Salt and Habanero Chili

package.  A bold choice for anyone who loves a bit of a culinary adventure.  After the first silky bite, you taste a small crystal of sea salt that slowly melts in your mouth with the chocolate.  Then when you least expect it you taste the kick of the habanero c

hili pepper.   Eating this chocolate bar is like falling in love.  A must have. And for an added spiritual bonus, the salt will cleanse your soul and the peppers will awaken your passion.  Bernard Callebaut stores are everywhere but I like going to 847 17 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2S 0B7.  They know me too well there.

Food is an amazing thing but comfort food is truly magical.  When you need a boost, it’s always good to reach for something that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside.  The good news is that it is easy to find and if you don’t wish to go out, you can always look in your own home.  I like to bake my world famous “Monster Cookies” (I will post the recipe next week).  What is your favorite comfort food?

Making Magic Come To Life

Greetings fun-seekers, adventurers, explorers and adrenaline-junkies. Thank you choosing to visit my blog; Light, Laughter and a Little Magic. My name is Erika but I also go by “The Oracle.” I’m a blogger and aspiring story-teller. I’ve been blogging since January 1, 2015. I’ve been on a couple of sabbaticals but I am back and looking to help others find exciting escapades.

I’m a fun-loving woman who loves a good adventure and to write them down. I’ll be taking you all on some of my experiences in hopes to not only entertain but inform. There are so many amazing things to see and do out there. Some of the things I do will involve spending some money while others will not cost you a dime. The stories I tell you can be done with family, friends or by yourself. Whatever the experience, I hope to set your imaginations free and inspire you to try some of these amazing things.
I am a free spirit on a journey and in order to tell you my story, I have to share it with you this way. But first, here are a few things about myself. I have a sweet little kitty named Karma, I live in a colorful plant-filled condo and have a lot of things that I like to do. My favorite hobbies include circus acrobatics, archery, yoga, knife-throwing, cooking and gardening. That’s right, I’m a circus-loving foodie with a penchant for long-range weaponry, and a fondness for plants. I’m also very much into meditation, music, dancing, travelling, love stories, nature, and just about anything that’s fun. Life is too short, you might as well do everything that this world has to offer.

Goals for My Blog

For me, blogging is about sharing what’s inside of you with the people in your life. My goal is to start your day off on a happy note while you have your first cup of coffee in the morning. Or, you can enjoy my blog at the end of your day while you are enjoying a glass of wine. Either way, I wish to inspire you to grab life with both hands.

What you can expect from my blog

Magic and fun. I will recommend some pretty cool stuff that should be tried at least once. You will also notice that everything I write has a bit of a mystical twist. I see the world as an exhilarating enchanting amusement park that’s waiting to be explored. I would never recommend anything that I didn’t like, this I promise you.
